UEFA Cracks Down on ‘Pirate’ Euro Cup Streams

Labels: , , , , ,

uefa2016logoWith a daily audience of tens of millions of people, the 2016 UEFA Euro Cup in France is one of the largest sporting events of the year.

While football is considered to be a game of the people, UEFA is carefully controlling who can watch what, when and where.

One of the thorns in the side of the football organization and its rightsholders are unauthorized live streams. These streams have become quite common, and offer people a chance to follow the various matches without having to pay for a subscription.

Over the past week UEFA and its partners have targeted several sites offering such streams. They includes several Google Blogspot blogs that are specifically setup to stream sports events.

TorrentFreak has checked several UEFA notices that were addressed to Blogspot and found that none of the pages were taken down. However, the live feeds on these sites are no longer available, which means that there is no infringing activity either.

uefablogspot

This also signals one of the problems sports broadcasters often have to deal with. Due to the live nature of their “works” the actual takedowns have to be pretty much instant. After all, when a match has ended it’s already too late.

Some UEFA Euro Cup rightsholders have tried to address this by sending advance notices to various sites. However, for site owners it is hard to take something down that doesn’t yet exists.

Various torrent sites therefore refused to take pre-preemptive action, and Google hasn’t responded yet to a similar pre-piracy request.

In addition to various specialized live streaming portals, the UEFA Euro Cup and other events are also more frequently shared on social media. Apps such as Periscope make is very easy for people to stream and watch these events and despite the horrible quality, some get hundreds or thousands of views.

UEFA has previously gone after Periscope streams of other events and some recent Euro Cup streams have disappeared as well, suggesting that the football organization is keeping a close eye on these social streams too.

Twitter Scoops Up Machine Learning Firm Magic Pony Technology

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

Check out my article, Best MLM out there?

Check out my second book, Utilizing IFTTT: For the Marketer, found on Amazon!

Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey announced in a blog post that the company acquired machine learning outfit Magic Pony Technology.

The London-based company’s focus was on visual processing.

Dorsey did not mention terms of the deal, but two sources told TechCrunch Twitter is paying $150 million for Magic Pony Technology, which factors in retention bonuses for its staff of about 11, including co-founder Zehan Wang and co-founder and CEO Rob Bishop.

Dorsey wrote in his blog post:

Machine learning is increasingly at the core of everything we build at Twitter. It’s powering much of the work we’re doing to make it easier to create, share and discover the very best content so that every time you open Twitter, you’re immersed in the most relevant news, stories and events for you.

Our acquisition of Magic Pony builds on other investments we’ve made in machine learning, beginning with the acquisitions of Madbits in July 2014 and Whetlab in June 2015. Magic Pony’s team will be joining Twitter Cortex, a team of engineers, data scientists and machine learning researchers dedicated to building a product in which people can easily find new experiences to share and participate in.

Magic Pony’s technology–based on research by the team to create algorithms that can understand the features of imagery–will be used to enhance our strength in live and video and opens up a whole lot of exciting creative possibilities for Twitter. The team includes 11 PhDs with expertise across computer vision, machine learning, high-performance computing and computational neuroscience, who are alumni of some of the top labs in the world.

And Magic Pony said on its homepage:

We’ve been developing state-of-the-art machine-learning-based approaches for visual processing on web, desktop and mobile over the past 18 months, filing over 20 international patents and publishing at top conferences along the way.

Today we’re excited to announce that we’re joining forces with Twitter to use our technology to improve the visual experiences that are delivered across their apps.

Together with Twitter, we’re looking forward to vastly accelerating our rate of research; growing our team, which will serve as the European home base for Twitter’s machine learning efforts; and continuing to publish. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what we think is possible in this area and are excited to see what the future holds.

Become a Peer Reviewer for Citizen Scientist

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

Find all my tech books and more on, Amazon!

One of the keys to our scientific community is the concept of Peer Review. When important discoveries are made, the work is reviewed by others accomplished in the same field to test the findings. This can verify the work, but it can also open up new questions and lead to new discoveries.

We’re adding Peer Review to the Hackaday Prize. It’s a new way to apply your skills for the benefit of all. The current challenge is Citizen Scientist; calling for projects that help make scientific research more widely available. A set of independent eyes giving constructive feedback to these entries can be a huge end run to success. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know. Having help recognizing stumbling points, or just receiving a second opinion that you’re on the right track makes a big difference when treading in unknown territory.

Becoming a Peer Reviewer is simple. Pick a project you are interested in, review it thoroughly while making notes in a respectful, positive, and constructive way. When you’re ready, submit your Peer Review using this form. We will privately share your review with the project creator.

Hackaday.io is the most vibrant hardware collaboration platform in the world. Peer Review is yet another interesting way to get more brilliant minds in our community involved in building something that matters.

Last week was a big one for marketing news, and that prompted a full hour’s worth of conversation and analysis in the latest episode of our weekly video show — and now a podcast, too — Marketing Land Live.

We began by discussing the news from Apple’s annual developers conference, including the potential impact on Google from Apple’s move to bring Siri search to the desktop. We also talked about the Microsoft-LinkedIn deal and what it might mean for digital advertisers. There were a couple rants during the show — one about a Facebook VP’s prediction that News Feed will be “probably all video” within five years, and the other about the confusion over how Google Autocomplete works and accusations that it’s been favoring U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

This episode runs just under an hour and features Marketing Land’s Ginny Marvin, Greg Sterling, Danny Sullivan and myself. You can watch the replay below, and be sure to scroll below the video for this week’s Show Notes, with links to the stories we talked about.

If you’d prefer an audio version of our weekly show, it’s now available as a podcast on both iTunes and Google Play Podcasts.

First 360-degree Video From An Amateur Rocket?

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

Find all my tech books and more on, Amazon!

Space. The final 360-degree frontier. These are the voyages of the Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS), whose ongoing mission is to seek out new civilizations and launch rockets at them. For their latest adventure, they stuck a 360-degree video camera into their rocket. The resulting video is spectacular, from the pre-launch drama of an attack by a giant bee to the parachute release. It also works in Google Cardboard or Oculus Rift through the YouTube viewer.

The 360-degree video was made from video captured by five GoPro cameras stuck inside a custom-built module mounted inside the rocket body, then stitched together by PTGUI for the final video. The PSAS has been building modular rockets for some time, and this camera was mounted on their LV2 model. In this flight, the rocket reached an altitude of 4.7km (about 3 miles high), reaching a peak velocity of about 350 meters per second. That’s a pretty impressive height and speed, and you definitely get a good feeling for the dramatic climb of the rocket as it zooms up. This is some impressive stuff from a group of serious rocketeers who are boldly going where nobody has gone before…

How NYC’s fitness scene is responding to Orlando

Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:

What is Plexus?

Pride Week is recognized every year at many of New York City’s fitness studios, with celebratory spin classes and trainers marching together in the parade.

But this year, leaders on the fitness scene are responding to the events in Orlando by hosting workouts that are more about giving back and taking a (sweaty) stand than rocking rainbow swag (although you should absolutely still do the latter, too).

“What’s beautiful about New York is that it feels like such an inclusive city, it feels like a city where you get to be accepted for who you are,” says Fhitting Room instructor Ben Wegman, who led the charge to recognize the tragedy at the popular HIIT studio, which is now hosting two “Love is Love” classes on June 22 (9:30 a.m. at Flatiron) and 25 (12 p.m. at 67th Street) to benefit the OneOrlando Fund. “To not stand up in a moment like that feels like it’s sort of denying what it is to be a New Yorker.”

TS Fitness hosted a We Are Orlando Charity Fitness Bootcamp this past Saturday, June 18, and Courtney Paul’s CPX is hosting a Pride Werkout on June 22, both to benefit Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund.  SoulCycle’s #OrlandoUnited Rides throughout the weekend of June 17-19 benefited the same fund, and Flywheel’s GLAAD Rides on June 23 and 25 support GLAAD’s work keeping the tragedy in Orlando in the media.

“You get to see every shape, size, and kind of person, and everyone is respecting and cheering on the person next to them. That’s what we stand for every day.”

Last year, Pride Week classes were filled with the exuberant energy of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, which makes 2016’s festivities even more difficult, says popular trainer Zack Schares. “This year its much different. I’m so heartbroken. You go to bed thinking everything is okay, then wake up realizing it actually isn’t,” he says. “Within the fitness community, I have so much love around me, and I wanted to bring people together and celebrate love and NYC Pride, but also help those in Orlando who really need some love right now.”

To that end, Schares is hosting a “Pride Tri” on June 25 that includes a swim at The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, a spin class at Swerve, and a run at Mile High Run Club, with $50 from each ticket ($125) going to a person in need in Orlando.

But what does working out have to do with standing up for #loveislove and gay rights? “Fitness is about being strong and being in control of your body, and having respect for your body and the body next to you,” Wegman says. “If you’re ever talking about tolerance, it happens in a New York City fitness class. You get to see every shape, size, and kind of person, and everyone is respecting and cheering on the person next to them. That’s what we stand for every day.”

Orlando also hits home for the large gay community represented on the fitness scene. “There is no other community that supports LGBTQ like the fitness professionals in NYC,” Schares says. “There are some really great people who others look up to. If we come together and do something and give back, a lot can be done.”

Giving back is good for your health, too. Find out why, here.
